Little Dolls

mayabookshelf-2

mayabookshelf-1

We were celebrating Christmas Eve with family when Maya discovered this decades-old doll.  It was handmade by my step-dad’s aunt.  Maya carried her around most of the day and I couldn’t help but snap some pictures of the two of them.  They matched pretty well, to.  Didn’t they?

*side note: she is such a little Mommy & I love it!

Thanks + Remembering

housefire-27

I have been wanting to write this post for a month now.  In the month since the fire, we have been busier than ever (as you can imagine).  I have started typing this up many times and it was just taking too long to figure out how to say what I wanted to say.  I could write a thousand words and it would not even come close to expressing our gratitude for what you all have done for us.  The prayers, the tears, the words of encouragement, the donations… it all means so much to us.  We so deeply felt the love that you sent our way.  So without trying to say exactly the right thing, I just want to say thank you.  You will never know what you have done for us.

The last six weeks have been difficult to say the least.  There were moments of just feeling blessed that we weren’t there and moments of just collapsing in tears in the closet because you want to go HOME and not have to constantly be somewhere else. Knowing that you should be able to get in your car and drive only 15 minutes to your house but you CAN’T is a horrible feeling.  Even though my kids have been taking it amazingly well, to hear my three-year-old tell me that she misses her teddy is so heart-breaking for a parent.  Although it has become significantly easier for me to deal with since the the Haiti earthquake.  When I think of all of the people who are sleeping on the street, and even worse, have lost their loved ones… it really puts our situation into perspective.

It is so bittersweet for me, but I want to share photos that I took the morning of the fire, Christmas morning… and then a few after photos.

The first four are actually from Christmas Eve

We will hopefully be in our new house before February is over.  It’s exciting and heartbreaking all at once, but the one thing that we know is that God is with us all the way through.

I’m hoping to blog much more regularly now… and more still once we are in our own place.

xoxo
Laura

a difficult post to write

We are receiving an unbelievable number of requests from friends, family and even strangers for a way to donate and help.  Here is a button that goes directly to our Paypal account.  We honestly can not thank you enough for the outpouring of generosity.

ETA: If you have something that you would like to donate, you can call Jan at 337-781-0687 and she will give you the address to bring donations. We have recieved an abundance of clothing. Aside from monetary and gift card donations, prayers are so appreciated.

It is 1:30 am and I am physically and emotionally exhausted, but I will give a quick recap of what happened today (technically yesterday).  Jeromy and I had a great Christmas morning with the kids at home watching them open presents, had a nice breakfast and got dressed for a day of visiting family.  We left the house at almost 1:00pm and went to visit family about 45 minutes away.  We were at Jeromy’s parents’ house when we got a call at approximately 6:30 telling us that our house was on fire.  We left the kids with my in-laws and drove home to see what was going on.  When we arrived, it was so surreal.  Fire fighters all around and in the house.  The fire had been put out, but they were working to get the smoke under control.  Hours later we found out that the fire was started in the attic by a leaky valve in the gas heater.  The kitchen went up in flames first and it spread throughout the attic.  Between the heat, the flames and the water, so much damage was done.  I was able to walk through the house to look at everything.  It was so difficult to see our house in such a disarray.  Furniture burnt, electronics melted, clothes and fabric black from smoke.  Some parts of the house were almost unrecognizable from before.  Jeromy couldn’t handle going near, much less in, the house.  It’s such a weird, awful feeling.  It is obviously so upsetting to think of the material/sentimental things that we have lost… but it is harder to think of never being able to go back home there.  We were renters there for the past five and a half years, but it is the only home our kids have ever known.  It is so heart-breaking to know that our kids can’t go back to their home and not fully understand why.  So many memories there, all of their favorite things, OUR home.  We really are just so grateful that the seven of us are SAFE.  God will give us strength and we can already feel His love through all of you.  It is such a strange feeling that we were just asking for support for my best friend and are now in need of support ourselves.  Thank you so so so much for showing us so much love and support.Sincerely,
Laura

December 26, 2009 - 3:17 am Taylor - Praying for you guys!

December 26, 2009 - 4:31 am Stephanie Hunt - I already messaged you on Facebook but we will be calling tomorrow. I have several bags of lightly worn clothes and toys for the kids.

December 26, 2009 - 7:32 am Brandy - Are you looking for a new rent home? My landlord has many homes, one will be available in a month. I can put you in touch with him if you'd like. I'm also pulling together some clothes and necessities to help you all out. Let me know if there is anything specific that you need. I am so grateful that none of you were home at the time. Things can be replaced. What's important is that you were all safe. You are in my prayers. I'm here if you need to talk. Love you all, Brandy

December 26, 2009 - 8:45 am Brooks Hopkins - Laura my heart sank when I saw a post on facebook linking to this blog post. Thank God you are all okay. December 26, 2009 - 10:19 am Chelsi - Having been through 2 floods.. the best advice I can give you is to really take a step back and breathe before getting involved with salvaging. I know it's tempting to just want to not deal with it and THROW everything, hoping for a fresh new start. But just take your time.. it will all come through. You have given so generously of yourself and time this past week, God is already at work with your family. Know that He would never give you a battle He was hands-down sure you couldn't win. This will make you all so much stronger. We love you guys.

Do you belong to the PPA (professional Photographers of America?) Hang in there and know that there are many out here, who dont even know you who want to help you get your life together. about 10 years ago we had a pipe in our attic burst and it flooded our home while we were on a ski trip. I know Jeromy from going to the camp in Abbeville with my cousins (Erica and Ashley Boudreaux.) I brought a carload of clothes and toys to Jeff and Pam's today for you guys. I left an envelope with some money, and a giftcard to Spa Almaz, for you to go get a message, with Jeff when I went. The gift card was given to me from one of my students, but I think you need a message more than me. I was under the impression that you guys were living in New Iberia, but when I talked to Pam today I realized that y'all were like a minute down the road from where I live now. I am hoping that I will get to meet you soon. One of the parents from my class has some diapers for me to bring to you. God is always in control and never gives us more than we can handle!!! Love, Through Christ, Carla Thibodaux Potier

Today, I'm raising 3 daughters and we have much to be thankful for. I wanted you to know that I've got 2 youth beds, a computer desk, sofa and clothes for you if you need them... If not, then maybe you'll know of someone who does. I wasn't sure of the ages of your kids, but I've got more than enough "stuff" for them to play with. [In today's paper, Greig Gachassin & Becky Matte are also listed as having had a fire and they have 6 kids).. Whatever I can do, please let me know Call 781-7776.
